National Art School Gallery presents the key works from over a decade of Vernon Ah Kee’s multi-faceted career.
The Year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum in Australia, which recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as people and included them in census. When this artist was born in Innisfail, northern Qeensland in early 1967, we was not counted as an Australian citizen. From this conceptual author’s perspective his status was a ‘non-human’, which was the impuls for naming this exhibition “not an animal or a plant”.
